THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOW TRUCKS

Today our communities are filled with different positions of work to help assist vehicles in car wrecks, private parking zones and more. The most commonly known vehicle for assisting the neighborhood are tow trucks. There are three different types of tow trucks that are used today and each one is used for a different purpose. If you require a tow truck you can call a towing company or use a company that offers tow truck rentals.

The three types of vehicles are axle cradling, flatbed, and hook and chain. The hook and chain is one of the oldest trucks used. How this truck works is the chain is hooked around the towed vehicle. Axle cradling is different, a large metal yoke is fitted under the front wheels and a hydraulic hoist is used to lift the front of the vehicle. A flatbed tow truck has a bed in the back of the truck that can hydraulically move the bed up and down to insert the car so it may be towed.

However, there are accessories and tools that can be added to these trucks. These tools are used to help make sure the vehicle can be towed by the truck present. Versatility and correct function of these tow trucks are crucial to getting the vehicle being towed to the exact location it is set to go.

Cleaner air, quieter streets in downtown Portland, after idling diesel trucks shut off their engines

He idled two of his buses outside her apartment on Southwest Salmon Street for 17 straight hours, she said, sending dirty exhaust wafting into the open windows of the Park Tower Apartments. Lovett's people did not respond to a request for comment. But he isn't the only offender; other stars have done the same. So too have refrigerated delivery trucks at The Heathman Hotel.

Instead of just suffering through bad air, Demmon, who moved to the Park Tower in September, took action. She contacted the Heathman. She contacted the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. She wrote the mayor'sBureau of Transportation Public Advocate Ginny Peckinpaugh. She created a downright stink over the stink.

And guess what?

People listened. The Heathman Hotel responded first. General Manager Chris Erickson asked vendors to stop the idling, which Demmon agrees they did. The hotel aims for sustainable practices and just completed a remodel that involved sending almost nothing to the landfill.

"We take this seriously," said Erickson. "We want to be a good neighbor."

Demmon doesn't mind the regular traffic that drives along Salmon. That's just part of city living. But excessive and chronic idling is an especially effective way to dirty the air. An idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling 32 miles per hour, according to the Oregon Environmental Council.

That pollution includes ozone, sulfur dioxides and particulate matter that together are rotten for the lungs and can increase asthma symptoms. It doesn't help that the Park Tower Apartments are part of a canyon-like area of tall buildings that is Demmon's neighborhood. On windless days, the fumes get trapped along the street and against the 55 units facing Salmon.

"Think about how much of that is coming into our lungs," Demmon said one day this month as she watched from her window a TriMet bus load and unload passengers.

The apartments in Demmon's building are Section 8 housing for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Demmon, an artist, teaches free watercolor classes in the building and knows that many of her neighbors have struggled their whole lives. That's why she feels it's up to her to complain. "People (are) intimidated and afraid to say something because they're poor," she said. "They feel like they don't have a voice because they don't have any money."

Peckinpaugh and Amy Stephens of the mayor's office agreed to eat lunch at Demmon's apartment and listened to her concerns in person.

Robyn Williams, executive director of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, which includes the Schnitz, said that after hearing the complaints, show representatives are asked not to needlessly idle buses. That seemed to work. But then last week Demmon was up at nearly 1 a.m. e-mailing Williams and Peckinpaugh about a "luxurious tour bus" at the corner of Ninth and Salmon running at that point for almost nine hours.

"I am terribly disappointed, and flummoxed, by such blatant disregard of the health and well-being of the people who actually live in this neighborhood, sharing air with PCPA's customers and employees, all of whom leave the neighborhood and go to their homes to sleep, without impingement to their breathing," she wrote, adding that she thought the idling problem had been addressed. "It's a warm night and my apartment absolutely reeks of fumes."

Williams explained that after that incident, she briefed the stage door security as well as those who oversee stage hands to watch out for idlers. PCPA is also posting "No Idling" signs near where the buses pull up. But she noted that sometimes idling is necessary to run lights for safety when the shows are moving heavy equipment in and out of trucks in the dark.

"We're really sorry this happened," Williams said.

Demmon rarely drives, walking most places. And now she notices idling everywhere. Young girls pulling over to text. A guy at Pizza Schmizzarunning his car while he grabs a slice.

"You wouldn't believe how many people idle," she said.

At least 43 cities, counties and states outlaw excessive idling, according to the American Transportation Research Institute. Not Portland. So that means people concerned about idling pollution here have to just rely on others to do the right thing. Demmon is glad she could.

Dub Chrome Rim And Your Tires

When you purchase your first vehicle you feel just like an adult. You smile and feel like your chest has swelled to outrageous proportions. Yes, you have made it into the “grown-up” world and now you want to explore some other options with your car. You think about it and realize your car needs some shine. Dub chrome rim would really look fantastic with your tires. But, what style do you choose?

There are numerous styles of rims waiting for you to discover. One of those types is the rims that spin around and around. Even when the momentum of the car has ceased, these rims continue moving. This seems to have a hypnotizing effect on everyone who sees them. Children and grown ups alike have been known to ask the owners of the vehicles with these rims to drive a few feet so they can view the spinning for a longer period of time.

You may be of a little older generation and not so much interested in the spinning as you are in the shine. Our wheels are imperative to enjoying our automobiles because without them we would never get to our destinations. Elementary chrome rims are very practical and look great with any set of wheels. Several styles come in many price ranges, so you are sure to find what you want. There are even rims that have color to go with that shine!

There is no law in place that dictates you must drive a certain type of vehicle in order to get a set of nice rims. It is your car and why should you not be able to put on your car what you deem appropriate? It does not matter if you have a van, a truck, a tiny car, or a sport utility automobile, you have the right to get rims of whatever design you like. The size of the tires should not matter because rims come in every size that tires come in.

Dealers for these rims can be found in several areas. A very good place to start looking is in your local phone directory. There you will be able to find tire dealers who should be willing to help you find the rims you are searching for. If you don’t find anything in the phone directory, another good choice is local magazines that advertise different businesses that can assist you in your endeavor.

Just because these rims are handsome does not mean they are weak. They are just as strong as the rims that are already on your car. These Dub wheels are just better looking. They will handle the problems of the road just as well as the rims you have right now. You should be able to expect strength and allurement in your rims.

The Internet offers probably the very best place to get information about these rims. Online you can visit websites that offer the rims and find out all the information you want about them. You can contact dealers through their websites, through email, or even call them on the phone.

75-Year-Old Eddie’s Pizza Trucks Its Bar Pies Into Manhattan

We’ve long wished that New Haven’s Frank Pepe would launch a pizza truck here, but instead of New Haven, we’ll have to settle for New Hyde Park. And happily so. Eddie’s, which may not be quite as old as Pepe’s but is just as much of a hometown institution, will launch a Manhattan food truck on June 10. Director of operations Debbie Jones tells us the pizzeria’s owners have outfitted an old DHL truck with four small Baker’s Pride ovens, to insure that the pies (made to order in about five minutes; no slices) will match the ones that come out of their 75-year-old restaurant’s ovens.

Customers will be able to order a sixteen-inch pie for $12.50 or a ten-inch “bar pie” for $6.50 (the latter is said to only have 270 calories — it’s topped with skim-milk cheese and the crust, which comes in whole wheat for an extra dollar, isn’t much thicker than a cracker). You can add whatever toppings you’d like. After it gets a paint job next week, Eddie’s Pizza Truck will make the rounds in midtown and Wall Street. Stay posted via Facebook or Twitter and check out the menu below.
